Welcome to the Languages Department
As our world gets smaller and smaller, it is increasingly important for us to learn to speak other languages. Learning another language is an essential life skill, helping you to get a better, more interesting job or helping you to cope easier with travelling to and exploring other countries.
Learning a language is fun, helps you to find out about other people and cultures, learn more about your own culture and country, gives you confidence, makes you more open-minded, helps with your communication and coping skills, makes you more employable and fits alongside other career paths. Learning one language makes it easier for you to learn another.
At SRG, you will learn either French or German. If you demonstrate excellent skills at language learning you will be given the chance to learn both languages in Year 9 – helping to widen your horizons even further. The lessons are designed to be fast-paced and interactive. We use a variety of resources and activities to help you learn in class and there is a wide selection of out-of-school resources to help you build on what you’ve learnt during lessons.
French
Key Stage 3
Pupils learn how to discuss themselves, their home and their families. They discuss school, hobbies and sports. Pupils also learn how to use basic classroom vocabulary, the French alphabet and numbers. They learn how to formulate and use the past, present and future tenses to discuss events, holidays and their free-time. They discuss healthy living and compare and contrast living in France to living in Wales. Pupils learn how to use a bilingual dictionary and other useful resources.

Pupils also have access to the department’s own ‘Wiki’ site, which aids language learning outside of lessons. The Wiki features vocabulary games, class activities, Vokis and weekly homework help. Login names and passwords are available from Miss Amos if pupils don’t already have one.

Key Stage 4
French is a popular choice at GCSE and our pupils do extremely well. Our pass rate is consistently high, with at least 85% of our pupils getting an A*-C grade over the last few years. During the course, pupils complete two essays in French and continue to practise their reading, listening and speaking skills in various topics. Pupils studying French get the chance to participate in our Cultural Studies Trip to the Opal Coast in France.

When considering your choices at AS and A Level, it is important to know what employers are looking for, i.e. communication, social and problem-solving skills, confidence and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Learning a language gives you these skills and helps you to stand out from the crowd.
French in the 6th Form: The course provides you with the opportunity to build on the language skills you have already acquired. In Year 12 you will learn about the lifestyle in and culture of France and discuss topics such as youth culture, career and travel and tourism. In Year 13 you will study a French film, book and/or region. You will discuss topics on environmental, social and political issues, e.g. conservation, immigration and globalisation.

From Year 8 onwards there is the chance to join in with our German Exchange, which has been a popular visit with our pupils for more than 20 years.
